Since we have 8,000 Prot palas in the guild, i thought i might as well give my 2 cents about important things to know.
Important Abilities

Holy shield - increases your block chance by alot and reflects a little bit of damage when you block. Should always be up.
Sacred Shield - makes you take less damage. Usable by hpala healers, but don't depend on them to use this on you.
I suggest making a macro that goes:
/target YourName
/use Sacred Shield
Divine Plea - gives you mana over time. should always be up, via a talent in the bottom-right of the Prot tree (Guarded by the Light)
Rotation

Major
A few good ones here.
Hammer of the Righteous (Hit one extra target with this ability. Great for aoe tanking.)
Divine Plea (Take reduced damage while plea is up, 3%)
Seal of Vengeance (Have 10 extra -2.5%- expertise while you use seal of vengeance. Great if you aren't anywhere near cap, which you probably won't be)

Minor
These don't really matter. For paladin, they're all kinda mediocre. The good ones are...
Lay on hands (Reduce CD on your fullheal)
Sense Undead (1% damage on undead when you track them)
Blessing of Kings (Reduced mana cost to use BOK and GBOK)
Talents

Holy tree:
Shouldn't need any skill points in here. Seals of the pure for SoV (Vengeance) if you don't know what else to spend stuff on.
Prot tree:
First Tier
Ret tree:
First Tier
Deflection (Parry Chance) 5 Levels.
Benediction (Reduced mana cost for most spells). 5 Levels.
Both of these should be 5/5.
Second Tier
Improved Judgement (Reduced CD on Judgement). 2 Levels.
Heart of the Crusader (Increased Crit Chance). 3 Levels.
Improved Blessing of Might. 2 Levels.
Only thing worth anything here is Improved Judgement.
Third Tier
Vindication (Reduce enemy attack power). 2 levels.
Conviction (Crit Chance). 5 Levels.
Seal of Command (AOE damage on every attack you do). 1 Level.
Pursuit of Justice (Disarm-protection and some Movement speed). 2 Levels.
Seal of command is mandatory, and Pursuit of Justice is great too.
This is as far down the ret tree you should go.
